You can now buy some plants from La Bonne Maison:  Odile Masquelier’s favourites

What is the best time to visit the garden?

It depends on what you want to see, and upon weather conditions. Usually, March, April for the bulbs and flowering shrubs, mid April until mid May for the Chinese roses and Tree peonies. Second half of May for the Gallicas, Albas, Centifolia, Damascenes and the Iris, End of May, early June for the last ramblers, and the perennials.

What is the best time to discover the roses?

May: the whole month.

How long do we need to visit the garden?

One hour and a half, at least.

Do you employ gardeners? How many?

La Bonne Maison employs 2 persons half-time. They are not professionals. Our house-keeper is in charge of admissions when the garden is open, waters the frames and greenhouse, takes care of the small kitchen garden and of part of the weeding. My husband mows the lawns. Most roses’ pruning and training, the seedlings, cuttings, difficult weeding and difficult plantations are for myself.

I also take care of the watering of all the garden.

Are coach parties welcome?

Yes, of course, by appointment.

contents

What kind of soil do you have?

Clay with pebbles, PH7, 7,5 that is to say nearly neutral, but the newly-bored well water is very alkaline.

contents

How do you water?

With a combination of bored and well water. There are 15 water taps in the garden, and 9 water-hose drums which I move around as per the garden needs. No automatic sprinklers because of the alkaline water, and because I am not an partisan of the drip-watering.

contents

What kind of fertilizers do you use?

Organic fertilizer, and a home-made compost of all the garden wastes (including weeds) carefully shredded through a powerful electric shredder, following an old English recipe. Within 2 and ½-3 months, our compost is ready to use.
