‘Nozomi’ Within the shelter of its high walls, the 9500 square meters of the garden, which used to be furrowed by violent storms, are now segmented by law walls; lawns link the different spaces together, to better give a feeling of unity, while still preserving the particularity of each garden spot. Some, through the planting of hedges, are closed, such as the Yucca Garden, or the Secret Garden. Neither phyto sprayings, nor weed killer have been used for more than 15 years. Early February, an important bulb collection burst forth from under the flowering shrubs and fruit trees, joined early April by the first species roses from China and Persia. Tree peonies and Iris germanica meet them up at the end of April. | Deeping Sarah |
‘Nankeen’ | A large hard-packed path bisects the high and lower ends. Under the sun, one walks along a big border of irises and oriental poppies, while in semi-shade one will stroll past the herbaceous botanical and tree peonies. | Later on, the ramblers entangle themselves and overwhelm the cedars, cypresses, paulownia, Judas tree, sophora, prunus. Some old plum and pear trees, carefully maintained and cut back serve as props, too. Clematis are just as enthusiastic and some, as Clematis armandii or Cl. Spooneri fling themselves up higher than 8 meters. Flowering goes on from March until June. The old walls and wire-netting enclosing the garden are still more props for the roses, wines and clematis to climb in mock-probation. | Iris and papaver orientalis |
